My Illustrations are ALIVE!!!

Throughout the 2014 election season, I had the great pleasure of being a go-to illustrator for the production house Adelstein Liston in Chicago. For numerous animated smear ads across the country, I provided illustrations in pieces which were then animated by Adelstein’s very talented staff of motion graphics designers. It was a lot of planning, quick-turnarounds, and wrist-numbing drawing and coloring…but also a ton of fun and a great learning experience.

Below is an example of one of them. Others can be seen in my “Animation Contributions” page.

‘Tis the season…for holiday EP art!

I was commissioned by Chicago R&B singer Adam Ness to design an album cover and Facebook banner for his 2014 holiday EP. Although it’s not the most intricate and detailed artwork I’ve done recently, it was still significant in that it’s one of the first projects I’ve done entirely digitally. That’s right, folks…No old-school pencil and paper involved here! These were completed using my Monoprice pen tablet and Photoshop CS6.

Happy Holidays!

Introducing Doc S’pocket…and his boxing kangaroo!

I was asked to design various promotional pieces for a Chicago jazz-funk-fusion band called S’pocket. They wanted an all-purpose poster they could reuse for various shows and a header and profile picture for their Facebook page.

Before sitting down at the drawing table, I had a few of the members over to my studio. After a few beers and some brainstorming, we began joking about “Doc S’pocket and his boxing kangaroo”. I needed hear no more! Below is what came of that wonderful nugget of wierdness…

(All these images were drawn freehand and colored using Photoshop CS6)

Oh yeah… Check out S’pocket HERE

Poster for Glass Mountain…

This Fall, I had the pleasure of creating some promotional artwork for the Chicago-based female bluegrass trio Glass Mountain. All the elements were penciled and inked freehand and layed out and colored in Photoshop CS6. Please check out their beautiful tunes at http://glassmountaintrio.bandcamp.com/releases.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s…Stupendous Man?!?

This is an illustration for a short story published on comedy blog Thoughts Aboard A Sinking Ship. The story is about a down and out superhero named Puddy Man and his attempt at reinventing himself.
The drawing itself was penciled and inked freehand and then cleaned up with level and contrast adjustment in Photoshop CS6.
Check out the story here: thoughtsaboardass.com. Enjoy…

One Small Buckeye Dream Come True…

As a huge fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes football team, I’ve always wanted to do an illustration for the organization. And although Urban Meyer himself has not yet requested one; nonetheless, my friend and graphic designer Kristen Caston asked me to illustrate Brutus the Buckeye for a T-shirt for a Buckeyes bar in Chicago called Butcher’s Tap. Couldn’t have been more honored to help! GO BUCKEYES!!!

Here’s the illustration with the coloring and layout completed by Kristen…

Adam Ness…R&B Singer, Galactic Superstar…

Chicago-based R&B singer Adam Ness asked me to design and illustrate an all-purpose poster to help promote his upcoming concerts. For the idea, he actually gave me a rough hand-drawn image of himself based on a dream he’d recently had. He wanted the poster to incorporate that dream while being very vibrant and brightly colored and incorporating the Universe as a background. I drew and inked everything by hand and did all the coloring and background imagery in Photoshop CS6. Enjoy…

He also requested a logo and business card design. I rendered the logo in Illustrator CS6 and made up the business card layout in Photoshop CS6.

Fun with Email Spam!

You know those bogus emails you sometimes get telling you (in terrible English) that you’ve inherited millions and all you need to do is give up all of your personal information??? Well, comedian and Odd Machine producer Alec Pinkston responded to one. What followed was a chain of hilarious email in which Alec attempted to turn the tables on the would-be scammer.

In June 2014, Alec read aloud the emails to an audience in Chicago. He contracted me to come up with storybook-like illustrations to accompany some of them. It was a hilariously fun project indeed!

Each illustration was drawn and inked freehand and then colored using Photoshop CS6. I choose the orange and blue color scheme to coincide with the sender of the email. Blue for our hero Alec and Orange for our scammer-turned-butt-of-the-joke.

Enjoy…
