Frank N Stein – Book Cover

Frank_FinalCover

This past February, I finally got the opportunity to illustrate my first book cover. Many thanks to R.G. Storm (his pen-name, to which he will be referred out of respect for his privacy). This was him and his co-author’s first book, and I couldn’t have been more honored to have been a part of it!

As for the backstory, I was lucky to stumble upon R.J.’s Craigslist posting for an illustrator. He received numerous applicants, but settled on yours truly. R.J. was a pleasure to work with – all through email – as he knew right off the bat what he wanted and even sent a bunch of reference materials – including a sketch, found photos, and color swatches – to get me started. Many artists demand a certain level of creative freedom; however, inversely, I take great pleasure in being able to bring a client’s idea to life. Even still, he gave me considerable range in terms of composition and coloring. All in all, it was a very comfortable and collaborative experience!

R.G. had some very kind words to say about the experience:

“In addition to being a superb illustrator, Adam listens carefully to what you need, anticipates solutions and offers great suggestions for the drawing, making sure you are 100% satisfied. He took my concept to a much higher level than I expected and I couldn’t have asked for a better job. Highly recommended.”

Can’t thank ya enough, R.G., and best of luck to ya!

Frank N Stein will be available Spring 2016 in E-book format. Please give it a read and show your support for independent publishing!

Borrow Tomorrow Album Cover

I had the honor of coming up with and illustrating the cover for the Indiana band Borrow Tomorrow’s album release March 3rd, 2016. I’ve been friends with and a fan of the band for a while now. Please check them out at http://music.borrowtomorrowband.com. You can also give a listen on Spotify and iTunes as well. Cheers!

Susie Q Movie Poster

In February 2016, I won a contest to design a poster for the independent film Susie Q. Vitelloni Productions then asked me to incorporate the poster into the cover for the film’s soundtrack. Everything was drawn and arranged digitally using Photoshop CS6.

Practice Makes Perfect…Hopefully?

I was recently contracted to complete a 4 issue comic book for a film company based out of Indiana. What a dream!! I’ve wanted to get paid to draw a comic book since I was a child.

In preparation, I wanted to practice creating a page in order to establish a reliable and efficient digital workflow. The process will certainly take some refining; however, I think I’m off to a good start. I created this page using a combination of Photoshop CS6 and Clip Studio Pro (aka Manga Studio 5)

Enjoy… and please wish me luck… gonna need it!

Arcade OdysseyHive Illus WEB

In May 2015 I entered a competition to design the label for Chicago-based brewery Arcade Brewery’s next “Public Brew” – Odyssey Hive. This beer is an American Pale Ale brewed with Honey – so I wanted to do my a take on Homer’s Odyssey in which our patriot hero, lost at sea, is confronted by a swarm of giant bees out to steal his beloved booze – how dare they!!!

Unfortunately, mine was not selected; however, I had a great time creating this illustration, and I couldn’t have been more thankful for all the support and votes from my friends and family – that alone was worth it!

Technique-wise, I drew and inked the image freehand, scanned it, placed it within the specified template provided by Arcade Brewery, and colored it in Photoshop CS6.

Here’s the inked illustration just after I scanned it…

Design for DOV Clothing…

DOV Seal 01 Final LOW RES

This past winter, I designed a seal for the fantastic Chicago-based clothing company DOV Clothing. It’s available on a long sleeve tee or on a hat – both of extremely high quality and very comfortable!

The owner, Brad, could not have been cooler to work with, and I’m hoping to have the chance to do more designs for them down the line. Stay tuned for those, but for now enjoy…

The Awning of a New Era…

Cork Awning FINAL Vector - Richardson

In August 2014, I won a contest to redesign the awning for a great Chicago dive bar called Cork Lounge. The original artwork from concept to completion took only a few days; however the process to get the actual awning installed took months, finally getting up on the building at the end of December!

BIG THANKS to my friend Erin for pointing out the contest, to Cork Lounge for appreciating my artwork, to PBR for being a source of inspiration and consumption, and to Chesterfield Awning Co for doing the gruntwork of printing and installing this beast!

As for the technical artistic process: I draw all the linework freehand, colored it in Photoshop CS6, and cropped and vectorized it using Illustrator CS6.

Here’s the awning in action…
